The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is a statutory body set up by an Act of the Parliament of India. It is under the ownership of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying of the Government of India. The main office is in Anand, Gujarat with regional offices throughout the country.

Objective-

  • The government has taken steps to modernize the milk processing plants and machinery to create additional infrastructure for processing more milk.

  • It is expected that this will help to increase the value of milk, and thus enable greater opportunities for dairy farmers to own their own dairy facilities.

  • The government has also set up a plan to bring efficiency in dairy processing plants/producer owned and controlled dairy institutions, thereby enabling optimum value of milk to milk producer farmers and supply of quality milk to consumers.

  • Additionally, the government is working towards increasing the share of milk that is produced by producer owned and controlled institutions in an organized market. This will provide greater opportunities of ownership, management and market access to rural milk producers in the organized liquid milk market.

  • Finally, the government is working towards making increased price realization for milk producers through consolidation of positions as dominant players in the organized liquid market.

The Government of India has been actively promoting dairy development in the country by providing financial support through a number of schemes to increase the income of farmers.

The Dairy Development Scheme aims at improving productivity, profitability and quality of milk produced by dairy farmers. The scheme also ensures that dairy farmers get adequate protection from climate change and other natural disasters.

The National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) was launched by the Government of India. The NPDD scheme is designed to provide technical and financial assistance for the dairy development and thereby creating any infrastructure related to the processing, production, marketing and procurement by the milk federation/unions while extending their activities by providing training facilities to the farmers.

2. Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS)

The subsidy to the tune of 25% of the project cost has been provided to general category beneficiaries & 33.33% to SC/ST category beneficiaries.

3.National Dairy Plan-I (NDP-I)

NDP I has set out clear and ambitious Objectives to make further progress in NLDP I. This includes continuing to improve productivity of milch animals, making it easier for producers to sell their milk, improving marketing and processing of milk, increasing the supply of raw milk by supporting the expansion of good quality small-scale dairies and increasing access to knowledge about dairy production.
