India is the world's largest producer of buffalo milk, contributing over 70% of the global buffalo milk supply. Indian buffalo breeds are prized for their high milk yield, rich fat content, and adaptability to various climates. These breeds are the backbone of India’s dairy industry, supplying nutrient-dense A2 milk, ideal for making ghee, paneer, curd and khoya. These indigenous breeds are often preferred over exotic ones due to their ability to thrive in India’s harsh climates with minimal inputs.

Indian Buffalo Breeds
India has about 13 recognized buffalo breeds. Key breeds include:
Murrah: Originating from Haryana, the Murrah is the most popular buffalo breed, often called the “black gold” of India. It yields 15-20 litres of milk daily with a high fat content (7%-8%).
Jaffarabadi: Native to Gujarat, Jaffarabadi buffaloes are the largest of Indian breeds, known for their heavy milk production (12-15 litres daily) and massive, curved horns.
Bhadawari: Found in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, this breed is renowned
for its high butterfat content (up to 13%), making it ideal for ghee production.
Mehsana: A cross between Murrah and Surti, Mehsana buffaloes from Gujarat are efficient milk producers (10-14 litres daily) and well-suited to semi-arid regions.
Surti: Also from Gujarat, Surti buffaloes are smaller but highly efficient, producing 8-12 litres of milk with good fat content.
