Petha is a traditional North Indian sweet made from ash gourd, a pale green vegetable known as petha or safed kaddu in Hindi and white pumpkin or winter melon in English. The ash gourd pieces are cooked in sugar syrup until they turn translucent. Dry petha, also called sukha petha, is the drier version with a light sugar coating, which makes it soft and chewy inside and easy to store and carry. Dry petha is served after meals, offered as prasad, shared during festivals and packed as a sweet gift for family and friends. It goes well with a cup of tea too.
