Indian Cow Breeds: A Brief Overview

India, with its rich agricultural heritage, is home to a diverse range of indigenous cow and buffalo breeds, each uniquely adapted to the country's varied climates and farming needs. These breeds play a vital role in dairy production, draught work and cultural practices. Below is a concise look at some prominent Indian cow and buffalo breeds.

Indian Cow Breeds

India has over 50 recognized indigenous cow breeds, known for their resilience, disease resistance and suitability to local environments. Some notable ones include:

  • Gir : Originating from Gujarat, Gir cows are prized for their high milk yield (up to 10-15 litres daily) and adaptability to hot climates. Their distinctive convex forehead and long, drooping ears make them easily recognizable.

  • Sahiwal : Hailing from Punjab, Sahiwal cows are among the best dairy breeds, producing 8-10 litres of milk per day. They are known for their heat tolerance and robust build.

  • Red Sindhi : Native to Sindh (now in Pakistan), this breed is valued for its milk production and adaptability to tropical conditions. Red Sindhi cows have a reddish-brown coat and a docile temperament.

  • Kankrej : Found in Gujarat and Rajasthan, Kankrej cattle are dual-purpose, used for both milk and draught work. They are known for their strong build and lyre-shaped horns.

  • Ongole : Originating from Andhra Pradesh, Ongole cattle are sturdy and widely used for draught purposes. They are also known globally for their contribution to breeds like the Brahman.
